Legislative victory for native oysters
Amidst the myriad troubles facing the Chesapeake Bay native Eastern oyster, recent legislative action has concretely raised hopes for the iconic bivalve's future. Considering the ecological and economic futures of this vital Chesapeake Bay fishery, Maryland,Virginia, and US Army Corps of Engineers decided earlier this month to reject proposed introduction of the non-native Asian oyster into the Bay and focus restoration efforts strictly on the native oyster.
