On this lovely day let us honor the trees. Like the Lorax of Dr. Seuss beloved story, we should all be speaking for the trees. Without their generous gift of oxygen, life as we know it would not exist. Try to image what it must have been like when the native Susquehannas roamed the eastern forests around the Chesapeake Bay. The virgin forests uninterrupted by highways or bi-ways or mega-smart shopping centers. I know it's hard but I feel it's our duty to reflect occasionally on the way things were. It's really the only way to find direction for what's to come. Consider the story of the great white oak known as "The Wye Oak". Some may know the story of the Quiet Giant but many may not stop to wonder what a tree could know. But written in the growth rings of ancient trees like the Wye Oak are the accounts of a nation emerging from seed. To follow the history of the Wye Oak is like following four centuries of fundamental restructuring of mankind.
For the first time in thirty years the united states seems to be collectively looking for the right path to take for the benefit of our environment and for the first time the path to environmental sustainability is alined with economic prosperity. The two "greens" have come together, money and Mockernut hickories working together at last. It seems people are finally realizing that what goes around comes around and that if we want to celebrate Arbor day in the future we must plant trees today. So plant a tree if you can, if not here are some ways you can help with out getting your fingernails dirty. Happy Arbor Day.
