Ever noticed how some people are naturally busier then others? They seem to be driven by some invisible incentive for progress that escapes the other cogs in the social machine. That motivation, the energy and excitement that keeps their hands moving is the vision they have for what could be. A recent visit to York, Pennsylvania shed some light on some visionaries' unyielding desire to turn what to most looks like junk, into something amazing. Patrick Sells of "Salvaging Creativity" is hard at work doing just that, salvaging. He and his associate, Casey Tyrrell, are in the midst of recreating a 1920's warehouse, used to manufacture air conditioners, into a space for community betterment. The visions Patrick unveiled to me as we walk through the high, brick archways where so inspiring, I felt like taking up a hammer or broom right then and there and getting to work. He and Casey intend to turn what had been previously neglected, into a place of imagination, education, and creation.
Patrick and Casey's joint venture "Salvaging Creativity" is a company that provides architectural elements for distinguished projects. Their creations are spawned from the waste found in salvage yards and dumpsters. They can take a cast-away chunk of steel and work it into an aesthetic detail for any architectural component. But what's even more impressive is that they plan to pass on their knowledge and expertise to a new generation. Their vision for that old warehouse includes creating educational space for seminars and workshops, housing multi-use studio space for aspiring artists, hosting community events with live music and local foods, installing green-roofs and solar panels, and maintaining a production facility for their unique line of architectural elements.
No doubt there are highs and lows when forging a new path, but in the end, to see a vision become reality is what we all strive for. A vision like Pat and Casey's, a vision for a healthy family, a vision for a bountiful garden, a vision for a sustainable future. All have the potential to become reality and you can bet there are busy hands behind each vision working away at making progress, at "salvaging creativity".
Expect to hear more from our friends Pat and Casey as they continue their efforts to renovate their historic building.
