HEADING TO HUANCHACO

Hola from Huanchaco, on the North Coast of Peru. It feels good to get out of a really big city like Lima. Lima, like Atlanta, Georgia kept expanding outward even upon the surrounding moutains. The bus ride from Lima to Trujillo took about 8 hours. Along the way we passed little pueblo houses and sprawling agricultural fields of strawberries and other vegetables I didnt recognize. There were big black chicken houses very close to the ocean. The landscape I would describe as somewhere between desert and temperate. At points there are massive sand dunes and at other points, near rivers, there are green agricultural fields. We hugged the coast overlooking the Pacific and it reminded me of the rocky rugged California coast. I arrived in Peru´s largest northern city called Trujillo.  I would compare its acreage to the size of Baltimore. In Trujillo I was greeted at the bus station by many people who wanted to take me in their cabs. I found a trustworthy looking man and we headed to his cab. Of course when I sat in the seat, there were no seatbelts. ¨Huanchaco, por favor I said to him hoping that he would take me to the seaside fishing village about 12 kilometers away. We started out through the bustling traffic towards the beach and before I knew it we were stopped and he was talking rapido in spanish. ¨¨No Luce¨ he said. I realized we only had one headlight. Because my spanish is not very strong I didnt understand what he was getting at. I eventually found out that he wanted me to wait in the cab until his friend could take me the rest of the way. Together, him and I waited in the cab as cars flew by and darkness came. About 20 minutes later his friend came and took me to Huanchaco. In the daylight the town is very relaxed and the surf is great. Sodas are sold out of glass bottles and recycled. Public transport is heavily used. I plan to be here for 4 days then head to the highlands of central Peru to undertake some social work  volunteering. Until next time
